When it comes to students being able to bring their backpacks to classes, I don’t see what’s the big deal. We buy these expensive bags to carry our things in but only get to use them before and after school. Our books and folders would be much better suited lugged behind our backs rather than in our arms from class to class. The struggle is that we are unable to take these very useful accessories and put them to use!
I know that the school is concerned about bags crowding aisles between desks, but most bags can easily slide beneath. If a student cannot fit their bag under their desk, then, yes, they should not be allowed to bring their backpack to class. Otherwise, I don’t understand why it’s such a hassle.
Another situation that’s been brought to my attention involving backpacks in class is the schools fear that a student will bring weapons into class. I completely understand that the school wants to keep us all protected, but it is unlikely that a student would use a bag to house weapons. The small bag attached to our laptop cases could also hold weapons, but we still get to bring those to class. So if we can’t use backpacks, we shouldn’t be able to use our laptop compartments.
So here’s my solution. I think the best option would be allow students to carry backpacks as long as they don’t become a tripping hazard, distraction, or so on. It would allow students to carry their school supplies more sufficiently.
