"Keep Pace is one of the greatest learning experiences we have here at the high school."

For the past 12 years, students at CCHS have been given the opportunity not many other schools get.
On Friday, December 5, the Keep Pace program will come to the high school. Keep Pace is a program when members of the legislative services agency from the state capitol come for a day to give students a taste of what it’s like to pass a bill. The program only happens two to four times a year, one of them being at our high school.

Keep Pace is a program when members of the legislative services agency from the state capitol come for a day to give students a taste of what it’s like to pass a bill. The program only happens two to four times a year, one of them being at our high school.
Each year around 25-35 students from Charles City take part in the program. Student participants are split into two groups representing the two chambers of the government which are the house and the senate. Each chamber is given a bill topic to work on. Throughout the day, students work to research, write, and debate the official bill with the goal to pass two bills by the end of the day. In the past, students have worked with other schools, but recently it has changed to only working between students in the same school. Currently, Charles City is the only school in our immediate area that gets to participate in this program.
History teacher Steve McGrew believes that Keep Pace not only teaches students about the ways of the state government, but also many other valuable skills. McGrew says the program brings out leadership, cooperation, teamwork, and critical thinking. He also states that Keep Pace is one of the greatest learning experiences we have here at the high school.
