Kathryn Johnson and Joan Adams, foster grandparents at Charles City High School, spend several hours a week working with high school students. Previously the grandmas had volunteered at Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, and the Middle School. Four years ago Johnson transferred to the High School followed by Adams the next year for new opportunities and experiences.
The duo comes to CCHS daily, in the mornings and in the afternoons, to work with kids on their reading comprehension, word analysis, and communication skills. Johnson said she really enjoys listening to the kids read and answering their questions. Adams agreed saying her favorite part of her time at the high school is building relationships and working with the students. With a combined 20 plus years of grandparenting in the Charles City Community School District, the pair looks forward to the many years of service to come.
