Not everyone enjoys every subject offered at the high school. When a student has worked hard for years and is in higher level classes, it is a viable option for him or her to choose to opt out of a math or science class their senior year. High ranked seniors Kyle Trebbien and Colin Johanningmeier choose two different course paths, and reflect on their decision.
Last year Kyle Trebbien took Microbiology and Human Anatomy, along with Chemistry at NIACC over the summer. Trebbien has a deep interest in science, and next year plans on majoring in Biomedical Engineering, which makes it fitting that he would take Physics this year. Not taking a science class was never an option for Trebbien, because he felt he “needed the classes for his major” and “wanted to keep his mind fresh for college”. Trebbiens hardest classes are Calculus, Physics and Composition. In order to manage his time between school and extracurriculars, he “figures out what needs to get done first, and then works from there to finish everything.”
Senior Colin Johanningmeier doesn’t have the same attitude towards science. “I don’t feel its necessary for what I want to go into,” he stated. Last year, Johanningmeier took Chemistry, and this year he’s filling his schedule with math classes to prepare him for a major in Actuarial Science. Johanningmeier didn’t consider this a difficult decision, as Composition, Calculus, and extracurricular activities keep him busy. Johanningmeier manages his time by doing work in class, and working in his study hall.
