In the words of David Voves, the Freshman Retreat is “a great transition activity for incoming freshman.” It’s a way to get a fresh start in high school, and to learn about respect. Countless hours go into the planning of the Freshman Retreat. Mr. Voves constructs the Google Doc Application that every potential leader sends in. Out of the 80-90 upperclassmen applicants, 36 leaders are selected. A diverse group of athletes, actors, musicians, scouts, cheerleaders, and dancers are selected so that the freshman have a full range of people to learn from and experience the retreat with. However, the Retreat would not be possible without help from our teachers.
Mrs. Mckeag is in charge of contacting Youth Frontiers (facilitator). She handles all the communications with Youth Frontiers. Mrs. LaBarge is in charge of lunch and transportation, and the cafeteria personnel prepare lunch. Mrs. Mckeag, Mr. Voves, and Mrs. Hanes take care of sending solicitation letters to seek financial contribution. The big contributors to the retreat are: Excellence in Education Foundation, Charles Theater donation, and other donors from the community. Mr. Voves firmly believes that the Freshman Retreat is an effective way to accomplish the goal of transitioning students to high school, and giving everyone a new experience of total respect.
