The Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) Mustangs boys and girls basketball teams filled the Comet Gym on Friday afternoon. With the same bad weather that deemed three late starts and a snow day in Charles City throughout the week, the Mustangs had to improvise their traveling the last few days. “We made it into some bad weather on I90, we decided to get a hotel for the team, and since our coach (Brad Bigler) had a connection with your athletic director (Todd Forsyth) we decided to come practice here” said Amy Clemsen, an athletic trainer for the team.
The Mustangs needed to practice, facing a rival in Upper Iowa, tonight at 6 PM in Fayette. Tramel Barnes, who was once a player at SMSU and now is the assistant coach. “It’s a key game,” Barnes commented. “I was a player here two years ago. The current Upper Iowa head coach was an assistant at SMSU when I played. So it’s always fun to play them.”
The Mustangs have a game against Winona St. tomorrow, but hope to take care of business tonight versus Upper Iowa to improve to 10-5 on the season.
