Walking into the high school cafeteria, you may have noticed the giant charcoal-drawn faces of Robert Pittman and Tia McInroy by the front office. Welcome to the mini art gallery of CCHS’ very own junior Megan Roethler.
While many art classes are offered here at CCHS, Roethler did not make these works of art in one of those classes. Instead, she went to the art room during her study hall and dedicated that time to her passion. When asked how she got the inspiration, Roethler said that during an art club auction last year she made a drawing of wolves using charcoal. To her the charcoal-drawn fur of the wolves was easy enough to draw, “Since I can draw animals, (I thought) it’d be cool to do a portrait of someone.”
When deciding how to incorporate her love of charcoal into a portrait, Roethler said that she went to art teacher Brian Bohlen for ideas. Bohlen gave her the idea of making her works like those of Chuck Close, an American painter and photographer who made a name for himself with his enormous-scale portraits. With this idea Roethler has made portraits of two teachers, each making strange faces. Her first one is of Mr. Pittman, which she finished within two to three weeks. Her second one is of Mrs. McInroy, which she finished in less than two weeks.
Roethler revealed that she plans on having a set of three portraits, but there is a slight situation and the third one might be out of her reach, at least for now. However this does not mean there won’t be a third masterpiece. So keep an eye out for artwork done by Megan Roethler, the new Chuck Close.
